The composition for this painting was drawn using simple and similar curved lines on a white ground. The forms were built up gradually with a number of flat layers of oil colour, starting with neutral greys, and keeping the edges crisp. Consequently the paint layers are built up higher than the lines, and the history of all the layers can be seen in the glimpses of coloured edges remaining in the lines. This painting uses a restricted pallette of colours.
