SMALL OILS

Electricity. 2011

Oil on canvas-board, 305x229mm.

Like others of these small oils this image was painted over a previous image, almost obliterating it - but part of the original image had to be allowed to persist into the new composition. A series of free-form lines were drawn across the surface so the coloured areas they traversed were the survivors. The remainder of the surface was simplified back to a neutral grey, with a second set of interlocking lines in a paler grey added. The concept relates to the nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima atomic power station in Japan, which was happening at the time.
