EARLY WORK - ADELAIDE

This painting was exhibited in my first solo exhibition which was held in 1968, at North Adelaide Galleries. The theme of my work at that time dealt with the landscape, realised through lyrical abstaction. This series of paintings was colourful and surreal. The subject matter explored the extreme and exotic possibilities of an Arctic environment transplanted into Australia, and usually dealt with images of frozen beaches, caught between land and sea. Brilliant white areas suggest snow and ice, overlying and contrasting with the familiar temperate hues of South Australia. It is interesting to look back and see in these paintings the origins of the concepts that lead to the Extreme Landforms series two decades later.
