Ice Cave, 1990.

Oil on linen, 1830x2290mm

This cave was created by wave action on an iceberg. The sea ice that forms the floor has expanded and pushed up into a fractured ridge. Refrozen meltwater has filled an ancient glacial crevasse with transparent blue ice that is so clear that it radiates light into the depths of the cave. As it is comparatively soft it has eroded more deeply than the surrounding freshwater ice of the glacier from which it originated.
